Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he liked participating in different card games at a young age. He found himself becoming very aggressive in these card games while playing his dad. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a bit and headed to New York to play some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were difficult as he played many hours and lose most times. He made some extra money by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he might improve his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to acquire more rest and focus more on the game.
The actual improvement in his game began when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest gamblers would frequently challenge one another. Howard had access into several of the best minds in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would tweak his logical thinking skills. He applied these strategic ideas to the game of NL holdem.
He also helped his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie to move out to Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker competition. She is one of the best female players the poker world today. Howard relocated to Sin City in 1993 and participated in cash games for the next decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
