Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better begins just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A round of wagering follows where players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. Another round of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further round of betting follows at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants must attempt to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a few entrants can get baffled. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same concept in just about all poker games.
The low hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.
It may seem complicated at first, following a few hands you will be able to get the fundamental subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 offers an amazing assortment of betting possibilities and because you have many individuals shooting for the high hand, and many trying for the low. If you prefer a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
