Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 where he enjoyed participating in various card games at a young age. He found himself getting very competitive in these card games while competing against his father. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little bit and moved to New York City to participate in some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were difficult as he played many hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He earned some additional cash by being an runner for the poker players. He believed he might boost his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to get more rest and concentrate even more on poker.

The real advancement in his skills happened when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable players would frequently challenge one another. He had access into several of the greatest players in chess. With their help, Howard would tweak his cunning thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategy ideas to the game of NL holdem.

Howard Lederer also helped his sibling Annie Duke master poker. Annie Duke was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Sin City and compete in the WSOP competition. Annie is one of the greatest women players the poker world has ever seen. Howard relocated to Vegas in 1993 and played money games for the subsequent 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
