Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he liked gambling on various card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting very competitive in these particular card games while competing against his father. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a bit and relocated to New York to participate in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s first two years were tough as he would play extensive hours and do not win most times. He earned some extra money by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he could improve his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to get more sleep and focus more on the game.
The real advancement in his skills happened when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would often wager against one another. He was able to access a few of the foremost minds in chess. With their help, Howard would hone his strategic thinking techniques. He used these strategic concepts in the game of NL holdem.
He also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was a great student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the strongest female players the poker world has ever seen. Howard Lederer headed to Vegas in 1993 and played money games for the next 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
