Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most difficult but popular poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure game, has expanded in popularity so quickly.
Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of betting follows where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. A further sequence of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. a further round of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a few players can get baffled. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same concept in nearly every poker game.
A low hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the complete pot.
It may seem complicated at first, following a few hands you will be agile enough to get the fundamental subtleties of the game with ease.
