Howard Lederer lived in a family of five where he enjoyed participating in various card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming really aggressive in these card games as he was playing his dad. After finishing high school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little while and moved to New York to compete in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were rough as he would play extensive hours and lose most times. He earned some extra cash by becoming an runner for the poker players. He believed he might better his game by balancing his life away from poker. He brought about an attempt to acquire more sleep and focus attention even more on the game.
The real advancement in his abilities happened when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would often play against each other. He was able to access a number of the greatest players in chess. With their help, he would hone his logical thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategy ideas to the game of No-Limit hold’em.
Howard also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct choice. Howard told Annie to head out to Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. She is one of the greatest women players the poker arena has ever seen. He relocated to Las Vegas in 1993 and played cash games for the next 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, he made the decision to play more tournaments.
