Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he loved playing various card games when he was young. He found himself becoming really aggressive in these card games as he was playing his father. After finishing high school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a bit and headed to New York City to play some formidable chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were rough as he would play many hours and lost most times. He made some additional cash by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he possibly could improve his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more rest and focus even more on the game.
The definite advancement in his game happened when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable gamblers would regularly wager against one another. Howard was able to access a few of the greatest players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would sharpen his strategic thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategic ideas to the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.
He also helped his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. She was a superb student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie to head out to Las Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. Annie is one of the strongest female players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard Lederer moved to Vegas in 1993 and played money games for the next decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
