Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he loved participating in various card games at a young age. He found himself getting really competitive in the above-mentioned card games while competing against his father. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to place college on hold for a bit and moved to New York City to participate in some formidable chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were rough as he played countless hours and lost a majority of the time. He made some additional money by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he possibly could better his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an effort to acquire more sleep and focus more on poker.
The real advancement in his game began when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would often challenge each other. Howard was able to access several of the greatest minds in chess. With their assistance, he would tweak his strategic thinking abilities. He applied these strategy ideas to the game of NL texas hold’em.
Howard Lederer also assisted his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. She was a great student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the greatest women players the poker arena today. Howard relocated to Sin City in Nineteen Ninety Three and competed in cash games for the next 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard decided to compete in more tournaments.
